Record number of students visit Irish Cement Limerick Works

Over the past few years we have invited pupils from the neighbouring schools to visit our Cement Manufacturing operations in Castlemungret. In 2011 a record number of over 200 students from five local primary schools visited Limerick Works.

A tour is beneficial to students as it allows them to see several aspects of a business in operation, for example:

• Production  – Limestone is taken from the Quarry and through several processes eventually ends up as Bulk or Bagged Cement.
• The Environment – The production of CEM II cement requires less energy to produce and has a lower carbon footprint.
• Nature – The Quarry and surrounding area provides a diverse habitat for a range of plants and animals.
• Science – The creation of cement clinker inside the kiln is the result of a precise set of chemical reactions.
• Mechanical & Electrical – Throughout the production process various types of machinery and vehicles are used incorporating both trades.
• Agriculture – Cooperhill Farm has a herd of over 850 pedigree Holstein cattle.
